At Black Star Pastry, we believe many hands make delicious cakes. Right now, we're looking for another pair of hands to join our Torte Team—the talented team behind almost every slab cake enjoyed across the Black Star Pastry network.

 

From carefully layering delicate cake components to creating flawless finishes across 60cm slabs, our Torte Team combines precision, teamwork, and craftsmanship to produce some of our most loved creations. 

 

From sponge to slice, every layer, every finish, and every detail matters.

 

The Torte Team is responsible for producing all slab cakes across the business (excluding Strawberry Watermelon Cake), making it one of the most important production sections within our kitchen.

 

This is a high-volume environment where preparation, organisation, and consistency are essential. Working with large batches doesn't mean compromising on quality—every layer, every finish, and every detail matters.

 

Success in this role comes from understanding not just how to assemble a cake, but why each component exists, how each layer contributes to the finished product, and how precision at every stage creates the exceptional customer experience we're known for.

 

What you'll be doing:

  • Preparing and producing slab cakes to Black Star Pastry standards.
  • Assembling, layering, icing, garnishing, and finishing cakes with precision and consistency.
  • Maintaining exceptional presentation standards, including clean and consistent palleting and finishing across full slab cakes.
  • Understanding and executing the correct assembly of all cake components and layers.
  • Working efficiently to meet daily production targets and deadlines.
  • Collaborating closely with the Cake Team and other kitchen sections to ensure seamless production flow.
  • Maintaining a clean, organised, and food-safe work environment.
  • Taking ownership of your work and contributing positively to the wider team.

What we're seeking from You

The following will also ensure you have the lived experiences to hit the ground running in this role:

  • Strong preparation, planning, and organisational skills.

  • Excellent attention to detail and pride in producing beautiful products.

  • Good time management skills and the ability to work efficiently under production deadlines.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

  • The ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.

  • Experience in cake assembly, icing, garnishing, and chocolate work will be highly regarded.

  • Physical capability to perform repetitive production tasks and lifting requirements.

  • Pastry knowledge and experience are desirable, but attitude, adaptability, and a willingness to learn are just as important.

  • Strong focus on maintaining Food Safety standards and working towards a safe work environment.

 

About the Black Star Pastry Business

Black Star Pastry started as a boutique patisserie in Newtown in 2008 and has since grown into an established and loved brand. Our claim to fame is the Strawberry Watermelon Cake, a dessert that has taken social media by storm and earned recognition from the New York Times as "the world's most Instagrammed cake".

Now, Black Star Pastry has expanded to multiple NSW-based locations with standalone stores, kiosks, and pop-up installations.
